Do you remember everyone’s birthday and name day, yet every year you find it’s already mid-December and you still have nothing for the Christmas gifts? You’re not alone in this – and the good news is that a calm Christmas isn’t about luck, it’s about a plan. In this guide we’ll show you how to handle Christmas gifts for the whole family with a clear overview, without panic and without the embarrassment of duplicate presents.
Why Christmas gifts stress us out so much (and why it’s not your fault)
Gift stress isn’t made up. According to a survey by PayPal, Czechs are among the most stressed nations when it comes to Christmas shopping – more than half of respondents worry that they don’t know what gift to give their loved ones, and another half are stressed by last-minute shopping. The numbers speak for themselves:
Psychologists add that December is the time when a lot of things get “wrapped up” at work and at home, and putting off the gift hunt then quickly ramps up the stress. Czech psychologist and psychotherapist Dalibor Špok also points out that we add a large part of the tension ourselves by wanting “more”:
“We’ll celebrate Christmas for more days… We’ll bake more cookies, buy more gifts… And what does that lead to? To more stress and exhaustion.”
His advice is simple – focus on what truly brings joy, and cut out the rest.
And it’s also about money. According to a survey by the Czech Banking Association and the Ipsos agency, the average Czech household plans to spend 12,600 Kč over the Christmas holidays, and since 2023 (when the average spend was 12,000 crowns) households have gradually been spending more. The biggest share goes precisely to gifts – which makes it all the more a shame to “squander” them on things that end up in a drawer.
And that’s exactly what happens. According to a survey by Slevomat, conducted in September 2025 by the Behavio Labs agency on 1,000 respondents, 28% of people (almost a third) received at least one gift last year that didn’t please them. Slevomat CEO Tomáš Braverman notes that “among the biggest oddities was a voucher for a live hen.”
That this is no coincidence, but a systemic error in how we choose gifts, is something we explore in the article Why we give bad gifts.
The key to calm: plan first, shop later
The vast majority of peace of mind is decided before you ever set foot in a store. According to a Home Credit/Ipsos survey (data collected 3–6 Nov 2025, a representative sample of 1,000 respondents aged 18–65), today three quarters of Czechs (74%) buy most of their gifts already in November or early December, and only 9% of people shop right before Christmas Eve. Calm comes from a head start – and you know how to create one.
Step 1: Keep the whole family “in one place”
First, make a list of everyone you want to give a gift to. This is exactly where the event calendar in GiftWeGo helps: you see in one place who has a birthday and name day when, that Christmas is approaching, and the app reminds you of an upcoming event well in advance. No more sticky notes on the fridge and panicked “wait, when is it again?” How the deadline reminders work exactly is something we cover in the article birthday and name day reminder app.
For each person you can save a recipient profile in GiftWeGo – hobbies, sizes, what they do and don’t like. You don’t have to fill everything in at once; a few notes are enough, and you add to them over the course of the year whenever you overhear something. The calendar and profiles work in the Android app too, so you can jot down an idea exactly the moment it comes to you.
Step 2: Set a budget before the atmosphere sweeps you away
Only 29% of Czechs regularly set a firm gift budget, another 28% do so at least occasionally, and 43% don’t bother with it at all. Yet a budget is the simplest safeguard against panic overspending in the final week. Try calculating right now how much giving gifts to your whole family will cost this year – move the sliders and watch the total:

Tip: save the budget for each person in their recipient profile – GiftWeGo then makes sure the suggestions fit the amount.
Home Credit’s client ombudsman Miroslav Zborovský advises: “First prepare a list of the people you want to give a gift to, and set an approximate amount for each one – it helps you keep pace with both reality and emotions.” After that, you just gradually tick off the gifts you’ve finished.
How to pick a gift that really hits the mark
Here’s good news for everyone who worries they “have no ideas”: hitting the mark isn’t about luck, it’s about attention. Psychological research shows that the price of a gift doesn’t matter all that much – what matters far more is whether the gift makes it clear that you thought about the person. British psychologist Adrian Furnham (cited in the magazine Psychologie dnes) sums up that visible effort and personalization are valued most; people actually don’t care much about the price tag, while purely generic functional gifts (socks, sweets) signal that the giver “doesn’t get you.”
The "just to be safe" gift
More socks, random cosmetics, sweets. It looks like you're fumbling – and it often ends up in a drawer. These are exactly the gifts that drag down that half a billion spent on pointless things.
A gift based on personality
It stems from what a person surrounds themselves with and talks about. It shows effort and attention – and that's exactly what people value more than the price.
A few tried-and-tested rules:
- Watch what a person surrounds themselves with and talks about. What do they do in their free time? What did they last get excited about? Jot ideas down as you go – for instance right into the recipient profile in GiftWeGo.
- Don’t be afraid to ask. The question “what would make you happy” doesn’t ruin the surprise – research by psychologist Elizabeth Dunn of the University of British Columbia shows that people are happier with a gift they truly wanted, and her recommendation is simple: “Always ask people what they want.”
- Consider an experience instead of an object. A study by Cindy Chan and Cassie Mogilner (Journal of Consumer Research, 2016) found that experiential gifts strengthen relationships more than things – and on top of that they don’t “sit on a shelf.” It’s no coincidence that four in ten Czechs (40%, up from 34% in 2023) would today most like to receive an experience voucher.
- Avoid generic safe bets. More socks or random cosmetics make it look like you’re fumbling. Better one thoughtful gift than three “just to be safe.” If you’re dealing with someone who “has everything,” check out the tips in the article what to buy someone who wants nothing.
And how do you avoid repeating last year’s gift? In GiftWeGo you add gifts you’ve already given or that aren’t suitable to a blacklist – the system then won’t suggest them again. No more “but I gave you this last year.” (How the blacklist and gift history work in detail can be found in the recipient profile guide.)
If you’re browsing an online store and aren’t sure whether a given product suits the person, the GiftWeGo Chrome extension helps: right there at the product it hints how well it fits the profile of a specific recipient. And when you really don’t know – or you’re shopping last minute – reach for a gift voucher, which you create and customize yourself in the gift voucher editor. The whole process of how a concrete suggestion is born from a profile is described on the how it works page.
✅ The gist in a nutshell
Five steps to a calm Christmas – tick them off (0/5)
When to order so gifts arrive on time
This is the most common source of a December heart attack – you order “still in plenty of time” and the parcel arrives on December 27. This year Christmas Eve falls on a Wednesday, so the last working day before the holidays is Tuesday, December 23. Carriers agree on a safe drop-off date: ideally by December 19.
📦 Christmas 2025 delivery deadlines
Safe drop-off with the major carriers
| Carrier | Recommended drop-off | Last delivery day |
|---|---|---|
| Czech Post / Balíkovna | 19. 12. | by Christmas Eve if dropped off by 19. 12. |
| Zásilkovna / Packeta | 19. 12. | 23. 12. |
| DPD | 19. 12. (for e-shops) | 23. 12. |
| GLS – courier | 22. 12. (Box by 21. 12.) | 23. 12. |
| PPL | 19. 12. (96% of parcels delivered even if dropped off on 22. 12.) | 23. 12. |
An important detail: these dates apply to handing the parcel over to the carrier. The online store needs time to process and ship the order, so add a buffer and order earlier in the week. For clarity, keep this timeline in mind:
And if you’re running out of time, the advantage of a voucher or an email voucher is that it arrives instantly – even an hour before Christmas Eve dinner. You can find more about how to handle a last-minute gift online in a separate guide.
